We Will Miss You

John Updike died today (insert silly emoticon with a tear here). The literary world will miss you dearly, and I, as a New Yorker reader will feel the lack of your presence.

Nymag.com had a great quote from Updike about his own writing:

"my concerns — to survive, to improve, to make my microcosms amusing to me and then to others, to fail, if fail I must, through neither artistic cowardice nor laziness, to catch all the typographical errors in my proofs, to see that my books appear in jackets both striking and fairly representative of the contents, to arrange words and spaces and imagined realities in patterns never exactly achieved before, to be able to defend any sentence I publish."

Saturday Night with the Blazers and the Wizards

It was Sturday night in Portland and to me that meant one thing: Blazer time.  Robear scrounged up some $15 tickets off the internet and we went to watch the Blazers brutally defeat the Wizards.  They were, however, quite gracious and even helped the Blazers get to over 100 points in the 4th quarter so we (the fans) could get free Chalupas.  I got two.  For a real recap of the game (with a healthy dose of witticisms and sillyness) go here.  For a reccap of the snacks, keep reading.

We opted for the good stuff in terms of beer, though it is a staggering $8 for a 20 oz. pint, Drop Top Amber Ale is just so worth it fresh from the tap, plus there are no other options.  There is coors and bud light.  As I said, no other options.  We forewent the nachos tonight because of a massive pre-game pizza and garlic bread binge but I highly recommend them.  With the jalapenos of course.  You'll be crying, but it's so good.  We did, of course, get the requisite french fries, which are battered or seasoned in some way that makes them absolutely delectable.  Add a healthy dose of mayonnaise on the side for dipping and you have yourself a taste treat!  (No mayonnaise with french fries is not gross it is amazing, and anyone who has been to Belgium/eastern Europe knows that).
This guy was somewhere in the stands, and man, could he dance.

This car come out of the ceiling right in front of me.  Needless to say it was a bit of a shock.  To me and the very drunk girls next to me, one of whom kept getting lost.

Nicloas Batum taught us some French.

Friday Night

Jessica came over Friday night.  She's my second oldest friend in the world.  And she brought with her a little Present, a snapshot we took when we were 15 or 16.

We went to 21st Avenue Bar and Grill (721 NW 21st Avenue) for a tipple and some grub.  The tater tots were delightful (I'm yet to have a bad tot I believe) and the drinks were a-okay.  It is kind of a dive bar, some of the floors are buckled, watch your step, but other than that it is just a non-descript bar bar.  It has an outdoor patio and lots of seating.  Our waitress was a sweetheart and her t-shirt was covered in lightning.

Robert and I spent the morning in bed. Delight.
